A Dancer's Adventure

Lynne's Adventures through Letters and Cards

Marta's best friend Lynne begins a grand adventure when she travels to Paris on a dance exchange. Her move to a wacky boarding house is not a good fit for an outspoken American dancer but it creates humorous encounters with the tenants. At the end of the exchange, Lynne becomes the travel companion for her harebrained Uncle Leo. She sends postcards and letters to Marta to retell her mapcap adventures.

During Lynne's second year with the Intermountain Ballet Company in Billings, she applies for the opportunity to spend the summer in France dancing. After she makes needed adjustments, including trying to ignore Suzette, a pesky fellow dancer, Madame Cosper allows her to accept the position.

Once her Uncle Leo learns of her plans, he makes her a series of offers if she'll drive him around after her dance schedule ends. Lynne easily agrees; it's a free trip around Europe. What could possibly go wrong?

As Lynne prepares for the trip, she meets a young rancher who sweeps her off her feet and makes her wonder if leaving now is a good idea. She adds him to her list of people she'll write cards and letters to about her impressions of France.

The trip to France begins after three brief stops: a visit to meet Bartley's mom, a stop at her family home and a whirlwind visit to New York City before boarding a ship to France. Once in Paris, Lynne moves into her apartment and meets several of the residents. She becomes an important part of the dance troupe and experiences the highs and lows, the funny moments and problems related to dancing, living, and traveling with twenty-four individuals for an entire summer.

Her adventure continues when she meets up with Uncle Leo to begin their drive around France, Spain and Portugal. For Lynne, escorting Uncle Leo becomes a full-time job that looks more like babysitting than being his companion. As their month together is ending, an unexpected situation arrives, pushing Lynne into new adventures.
